Canada gears up for massive intake of immigrants over the next three years

Canada gears up for massive intake of immigrants over the next three years. Significant increase in the immigration intake numbers announced for the next three years.

The Canadian federal government’s Immigration Levels Plan aims to fill 1 million job vacancies by recruiting immigrants to supplement the country’s most impacted industries — health care, manufacturing, engineering, and trades.

The government targets to welcome 465,000 new permanent residents in 2023, 485,000 in 2024 and 500,000 in 2025. The target for the federal business which groups the Start-up Visa (SUV) Program with the Self-employed Program goes from 1,000 to 3,500 in 2023 and 1,500 to 5,000 in 2024 and up to 6,000 in 2025. Thus, aiming to encourage the culture of entrepreneurship in Canada in the form of startups under the Start-up Visa Program. The increase in intake numbers will also hopefully greatly decrease current processing times for applicants.

Indians are the biggest nationality gaining permanent residency in Canada, accounting for about 40% of the total number. In 2020, over 27,000 Indians gained entry to Canada, with over 50,000 being invited to apply for permanent resident.

What is interesting about the SUV Program, unlike other immigration programs, is that it doesn’t have rigorous eligibility criteria of age, education, or ties to Canada in terms of prior work or study or family. Advanced fluency in English or French is not required but rather only a basic English Language Benchmark of 5 is needed.

Another feature of the SUV Program is that once the applicants obtain permanent residence, there is no follow-up to check on the business to see if it was successful or if it has employed Canadians and permanent residents. In other words, the entrepreneurs will be able to retain their Permanent Residency irrespective of success or failure of the business.

The Start-up Visa Program has been trumped by successive ministers of immigration as a resounding success and an opportunity for prosperity for Canada.
